86 / 100

The year 2020 may not be a good year. It brought us pain, trouble, kept us away from our family and friends. There were deaths with a little hope; every individual stuck at home for months praying for betterment. The health care department of every country and state worked tirelessly to save lives. Overall, indeed a tough year.

But there were things like movies and series that kept us all entertained. Thanks to all the streaming platforms, when the theatres were all shut down, these streaming channels were the only entertainment source at home.

Netflix delivered some amazing original content. I have enjoyed watching plenty of movies and series that truly deserve accolades. In this blog post, I have compiled a list of the best Netflix Original movies that you could still watch if given a miss.

The Best Netflix Original Movies 2020

The Trial of the Chicago 7

What a great film it is. Based on a true incident is an incredibly well-crafted film by directed Aaron Sorkin. The accumulation of a brilliant cast and their performances, including Sacha Baron Cohen, Eddie Redmayne, and many more, made the film such a great one.

It is no documentary, but it feels so empathetic and real while watching. I would say, ‘The trail of the Chicago 7’ is indeed the best Netflix original movies 2020 and also one of the top Netflix movies right now.

The Trial of the Chicago 7'

The Devil All the Time

Tom Holland, aka ‘Spiderman’ is well known for his quirky and fast-paced spiderman actions. I never thought he could act this well. ‘The Devil All the Time’ is a story that portrays a chronicle of multiple generations that got impacted by violence intertwined between faith and evil.

Every character and its story is deep, painful. Every character tells the struggle within themselves. It is vicious, cruel, yet showcases the true human colors when stuck between religion and violence.

I’m Thinking of Ending Things

Charlie Kaufman’s ‘I’m Thinking of Ending Things’ is a typical Kaufman’s conceptual film like dream-like realities, loneliness, frustration, dual identities, and love.

The film requires attention and patience to understand. As you move along with the movie, it will take you to some other end.

It’s a different take on love, life, and reality.

Is it the movie best?

Indeed, it is; just watch it over again.

The Old Guard

‘The Old Guard’ is an action thriller film starring Charlize Theron in the lead. The story revolves around a fantasy world where a group of century-old mercenaries who can heal themselves fight against a science nerd villain for their freedom. What’s amazing to watch is the thrilling fight sequences and cinematography.

The Half of it

There are plenty of LGTBQ movies that I have seen but nothing like the Netflix original movie ‘The Half of it.’ The story revolves around Ellie Chu, a shy and intelligent Chinese-American girl who is the only Asian student in Squahamish, Washington. She lives with her dad and earns extra by writing essays for others.

The film has mainly three characters Chu, Paul, and Aster. The story gets interesting and deep when Ellie exchanges text messages with Aster in disguise.

It is a beautiful coming-of-age film that respects the boundaries of two individuals and their thoughts.

Extraction

‘Extraction’ is yet another most-watched Netflix original movie of 2020. Unlike ‘The Old Guard’ in this film, Chris Hemsworth and Randeep Hooda gave a brilliant screen presence with top-notch fighting sequences.

Though the movie has a few flaws, like a major part of the film is set in Bangladesh and shown on yellow screen, it doesn’t make any sense.

What’s the best in the film that grabbed everyone’s attention is the incredible action sequences and cinematography.

Lost girls

The plot is based on a victim of a serial killer’s true story, a mother searching for answers for her daughter’s missing. It is a well-made, serious investigative-crime story that is brutal and painfully brilliant. The IMDB rating is only 6.1, but I believe the creators have done justice to the victims’ families.

The Social Dilemma

Netflix’s original ‘The Social Dilemma’ is one of the best documentary movies about social media. Several tech experts gave their honest responses about the addiction that social media has fed upon us, how dangerous it is and about the privacy breach, etc.

While watching the docu-movie, it feels so terrible and scary to know the truth. What and how we are ruining our and our kid’s life. How terribly day by day, we are becoming prone to social media.

Truth always is bitter, and as we now know what we are dealing with, we all should learn to limit social media usage. That’s the best way to save ourselves.

If you like ‘The Social Dilemma,’ I would also suggest you watch ‘Chasing Coral.’ It is equally a brilliant documentary movie to watch.

The Platform

‘The Platform’ is probably the most shocking, brutal, yet amazing scripted film that Netflix has delivered this year. The film tells an intriguing story of prisoners and floor number determine what they will eat on many levels.

This sci-fi thriller gory film is suspenseful, weirdly brilliant, and thought-provoking.

It symbolizes the class-based society and ideologies that exist everywhere.

A California Christmas

Each year Netflix adds new Christmas-themed movies. This year too, to light up everyone’s mood, Netflix has added in their category of films.

‘A California Christmas’ is such a heart-warming movie that tells the story of a young rich man who landed as a ranch hand to convince a hardworking ranch lady to sell her property.

But since it’s a feel-good movie, the ending has to be happy, and indeed, it is a great movie that I would like to add to my list for this year.

Ludo

Anurag Basu’s ‘Ludo’ is a treat to watch after a long time. The last film that I enjoyed was ‘Barfi’ by Anurag Basu. Ludo tells four tales of love, fate, opportunity, and crime.

The main USP of the film is its interesting plot, storytelling, screenplay, and of course, performances. Rajkumar Rao performs the best in the film.

Indeed, the best Netflix original Bollywood movie streaming on Netflix India.

Raat Akeli Hai

‘Raat Akeli Hai’ is a crime thriller Bollywood movie that follows the story of a small-town cop investigating a murder that took place in a family. While investigating, it unveils some shocking secrets towards the end. Why am I suggesting this movie? Because of the performances of each cast.

Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl

After the movie got released, the lead actress Janhavi Kapoor got trolled badly for her acting skill. But as a viewer, I felt she was okay, may not be the best. Both Pankaj Tripathi and Janhavi Kapoor performed the role of father-daughter that is beautifully portrayed.

The movie is by far one of the best Netflix Original Bollywood movies of 2020.

Tigertail

I watched ‘Tigertail’ without any expectations, but it is such a beautiful and emotional tale of how we all get changed in small ways by our choices.

The movie centers around a tragic love story and an immigrant who yearns for his old life and is guilty of the choices he made once.

The film is layered with emotions, greed, loveless life, culture, and existence of the self. One should watch the film as it is still streaming.

Conclusion:

Thus, these are the few movies that I feel are the best Netflix Original Movies 2020.
