For the past couple of days, I have been thinking about my relationship with my husband. We are on the verge of completing six years of marriage, and we dated for two years before we got married. So, proudly saying it’s been 8 years of our happy relationship.
A relationship has to be spontaneous. It should not come to you as a burden or like a responsibility. If there is profound ‘love,’ ‘trust’ and ‘understanding,’ your relationship will last longer and forever.
But like I always say, a relationship is tricky, and it needs care, time, and attention to make it successful. Both the individual has to give their 100% to make their relationship work.
There are simple yet important tips and ways that, if followed properly, will ensure your relationship last longer without any doubt.
Here, in this blog post, I will share tips on ‘how to make your relationship last longer and forever. It will be going to be a long post; please don’t skip. It will only help you and your relationship.
How to Make Your Relationship Last Longer And Forever
Let’s begin –
Make Time for Each Other
It is very important to spend quality time with each other in a relationship. Most people give importance to spending time in the first 2-3 years of their new relationship; after that, they let their life take hold of other things and take their relationship/marriage ‘granted.’
I have explained in my earlier articles that to establish trust and understanding, it is crucial to spend time with each other.
The more you will spend time with your partner, the better you will get to know her/his choices, perspective, likes, and dislikes.
How will it help to make your relationship last longer?
Of course, it will.
When you know each other better with passing time, your love will grow, and it will keep your relationship stronger and will last longer.
Maintain Strong Communication
You will see in all my relationship articles that I focus more on the ‘communication’ part. It is because communication is important in my marriage, and it has helped my relationship greatly.
My husband and I have one basic rule in our relationship; it is “no matter what, we always communicate and let each other know about our feelings and everything.”
Relationships are changing with time. Modern relationships are different. In my opinion, there are a lot of reasons why relationships these days are not lasting longer.
With effective communication, you can solve any problem and improve your relationship without judging.
The next point that I would like to mention is ‘expression.’ When you love your partner, you should, by all means, express it. There are a ton of romantic and simple ways to ‘express love to each other.’
Expressing love to each other frequently rather every day reduces the differences and gets you closer to your partner.
When you want to spend eternity with your partner and want to make your relationship last longer, it is only ‘love’ that will hold your relationship.
If you lack ideas for ‘how to express love to your partner,’ refer to the link above, you will get amazing ideas.
Surprises Add Spark
I am sure you love surprises when it comes from your partner. In a marriage and a long relationship, surprises add spark to the moment.
For example, your partner surprises you with a bouquet of flowers and a gift that you have been wanting for a long time. Wouldn’t you be happy?
So, a surprise gift, surprise visit, or a surprise date brings happiness to a couple. Happiness is required to stay alive and keep your relationship healthy.
Certainly, if your relationship is healthy and happy, it will automatically last longer.
Practices New Things Together
It’s the truth that after a moment or some years, life gets mundane. To keep the spark on, a couple needs to learn and practices new things together.
For example, a couple can learn to play guitar, join a gym, practice tennis together, or it could be cooking together at home.
Doing things together is fun, respectful, and it bonds a couple greatly.
During the weekend you can join your partner and learn something new. If you have a kid, as a parent, do something together with your kid.
Being in a relationship is a two-person job, so why not do things together.
I strongly believe, frequently traveling together can make and shape your relationship better. When you are traveling together, you will get to know a lot of things about each other.
It is the best way to understand each other. Traveling will not only bring you closer, but it will also build trust and reliability in a relationship.
So, travel together no matter how old you are, make time for travel amid your busy schedule.

There is nothing to shy about making love. Indeed, apart from emotionally and mentally, a couple needs to be comfortable physically in a relationship.
It is a very important point that determines if your relationship is healthy or not.
There are several cases in the world where relationships goes through serious issues. Making love must be respectful and romantic. Both the man and the woman have to respect their bodies and wishes.
One should always communicate about ‘physical love’ as well, like is your partner comfortable making love or not, make sure to respect each other’s physical boundaries.
Note: If you feel your partner is physically abusing you or you are involved in a toxic relationship, you must contact respective services immediately seeking help.
Plan Dates Even When You are Busy
How to make your relationship last longer?
In the simplest form, I would say ‘plan dates frequently.’ Till we are teenagers, we have a lot of time pleasing each other in a relationship.
Once you are out of that zone and set foot into the real world, you have to deal with multiple things.
There is career, competition, marriage, family, kids, responsibilities, and amid all these, somehow, we forget that we had a life where dating used to play a pivotal role.
There are plenty ways to date at home, on weekends, or date ideas that don’t cost you much.
What is more important is to give each other time, that’s why date is for.
Even if you both have a ton of workload, both deserve to get time-off.
You could plan a simple date in your backyard with slices of pizza, wine, and flowers, or you could plan for a short weekend trip or camping or just a takeaway and binge-watch a movie at home.
Be Respectful to Each Other
Always and always be respectful to each other in all the senses. Respect your partner’s individuality, opinions, decision-making ability. Never judge them without listening.
To make your relationship healthy, happier, and last longer, both need to know their places, and both need to respect each other.
This is one thing that almost every couple does. When involved in a rough argument, my husband and I sometimes blame each other unnecessarily, which escalates the situation.
Thankfully, we have our ‘ways to stop an argument in 30 minutes.’ Everybody makes mistakes. Instead of blaming each other for the mishaps, you can solve the issues in your relationship with effective communication.
If you keep blaming each other for every wrongdoings or mistake, there comes a time in your relationship when both will start getting negative vibes. This won’t help making your relationship last any longer.
Keep Encouraging and Support
When you both want to spend your life together forever, it is important your relationship survive till the last. As a couple, if both keep on encouraging and supporting each other at every walks of their life, it will make a relationship go smoother and last longer.
I have mentioned this point on my previous topic, ‘how to build trust in a relationship’ too. Cheating is never a good thing in a relationship or marriage.
If you are breaking your partner’s trust, your infidelity will create a permanent crack in your relationship.
And once the relationship is broken, it gets extremely difficult to regain not only the trust of your partner but also to mend the relationship.
People usually cheat when they are not either physically satisfied or not happy in their relationship. But this doesn’t give any partner the license to cheat and disrespect your relationship.
Again, I am saying that there is always a way to solve every problem in a relationship with effective communication.
So, if you want to make your relationship go stronger and last forever, ‘never cheat.’
Be a Good Listener
When two individuals are bonded in a relationship, both have to try and practice certain things to make a relationship better.
A good listener brings positivity and calmness to a relationship.
It is essential to listen to your partner. Listen to what he/she has to say or share. Don’t let them feel that you are least interested in their opinions, or you don’t care about what they have to say.
If you want to make your relationship last longer, be a good listener to your partner.
Compliment Each Other
Complimenting your partner is a simple way to show them how much you care and respect. It is a simple way to express your love for your partner. So, do not shy away from complimenting each other.
Be Kind to Each Other
Lastly, to make your relationship last longer, both have to be kind and generous to each other. Sometimes love is not sufficient; there are several elements of love required for a long-lasting healthy relationship.
There should be kindness, comfort, respect, understanding, trust, empathy, and compassion in a relationship with love. Together with every element will make your relationship better and happy.
Thus, the above-mentioned 15 points are my best tips for ‘how to make your relationship last longer and forever.’ If you follow all the above points, I am sure your relationship will be in a great place.
