Best Bollywood Suspense-Thriller Movies and Web Series to Stream in 2019

With the initiation of major video streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hotstar, and Zee5, it is becoming easier for us to stream old and new movies any time anywhere.

Today, I have compiled a list of best Bollywood suspense-thriller movies and web series that are available in different OTT platforms.

Suspense-thriller is an exciting genre where characters act suspicious, the climax and ending are the best part of a movie to watch in this kind of film.

Bollywood doesn’t have a great many suspense-thriller movies as such, but there are a few that are truly amazing. So, here is a list of those films that you can stream at your convenient time at home.

Bollywood suspense-thriller movies to stream

Barot House on Zee5

I happen to watch Barot House a few days ago on Zee5, and I loved the film. Amit Sadh and Manjari Fadnnis portrayed the character of parents to the young Malhar played by Aaryan Menghji who stole the entire movie for his exceptional performance.

The story is based on real facts where the lives of a happy family get ruined after the two daughters are brutally killed. There are scenes in the movie which will give goosebumps. An unexpected turn in the story takes, which is eerie and dark. A tale such as this is different, and it is great to see that creators are now squeezing themselves to want the audience’s divided attention.

‘Barot House’ has a great story punch line, from beginning to end, it will keep you interested because there is an element of suspense and thriller. Indeed, a great film to stream.

Andhadhun on Netflix

I am sure you all must have watch Ayushmann Khurrana’s ‘Andhadhun’ which is a perfect example of a suspense thriller movie. The movie has so many twists and turns that kept the audience’s attention intact. More than Ayushmann Khurrana or Radhika Apte, I loved the performance of Tabu as a negative role.

The story unfolds at several layers giving surprises at every turn. The pace of the movie is slow at first, but then it picks up, and you have to keep your eyes and ears wide open to understand the film till the end.

A pseudo blind man, his on and off game to become a perfect pianist. So, if you want to watch it one more time, then you can stream it online on Netflix.

Game Over on Netflix

Last weekend I watched ‘Game Over’ on Netflix, and it bamboozled me till the ending. ‘Game Over’ is a blend of psychological and supernatural with focused to only two characters, a game developer Sapna (Taapsee Pannu) and her caretaker Kalamma (Vinodhini Vaidyanathan). The film starts with a gruesome murder of a young woman and then the scene shifts to Sapna after a year of this incident.

We learn that Sapna is vulnerable to darkness who had a traumatic past. She is pretty much a loner who stays at home mostly with Kalamma and plays the video game. Slowly, the game changes to the character’s psychology.

One can have several interpretations of this movie. A layered story with layered meaning. A film like ‘Game Over’ is creepy and the interesting thing is the film keeps you guessing till the end what exactly happened or which version is the reality and which is the dream.

The film was out only in Tamil and Telegu, but it is now available in Hindi too on Netflix.

Tumbbad on Amazon Prime Video

Never have I ever imagined that a thriller film can be so beautiful, intriguing, and meaningful at the same time. ‘Tumbbad’ is technically a horror-fantasy genre of movie, but it can also be categorized as suspense-thriller.

A film solely based on a folklore story of mythological Hatsar – a God shamed for ravenous greed for wealth and food. The link between the immortal Hatsar and the character Vinayak (Sohum Shah) has shown so beautifully. The film represents a moral meaning on how too much greed for wealth can corrupt your soul.

A film which is well-directed, highly imaginative and stunningly woven together with story and characters makes it one of the best Bollywood suspense-thriller movies of all time.

So, far I have enjoyed watching ‘Tumbbad’ several times on Amazon Prime Video, you can too.

Manorama Six Feet Under on Amazon Prime Videos

Manorama Six Feet Under is a noir genre of film which is not very commonly seen in Bollywood. The film is an inspired version of Roman Polanski’s noir classic ‘Chinatown.’ Indeed, it was a great way to pay tribute to the legendary filmmaker Polanski.

I don’t know why a film like such is so underrated. The film has a complex narrative which pretty much deals with dark, secrets and revelations.

I believe a considerable section of the audience has missed a film like this which they should watch at least.

Drishyam on Hotstar

Drisshyam is 2015 suspense-thriller movies of Bollywood starring in the lead Ajay Devgn and Tabu. The story is about the disappearance of Tabu’s son where the character Vijay Salgaonkar (Ajay Devgn) is allegedly suspected.

So, how Vijay saves his family from the allegations and what actually happened to Tabu’s son is the real suspense here in the story which later got revealed by the end of the story.

The original film was in the Malayalam version which later got adapted into four different languages Kannada, Tamil, Telegu, and Hindi.

Ugly streaming on Hotstar

Anurag Kashyap’s dark and gothic film ‘Ugly’ is the next suspense-thriller that I would definitely want to add on my list.

Main characters played by Rahul Bhatt and Vineet Singh’s child is missing, now is she kidnapped or murdered?

Director Anurag Kashyap has a reputation in the Bollywood film industry of making dark, disturbing, shady characters but reality-based stories. The name of the movie ‘Ugly’ does represent what the film should be about.

All the characters in the film are grey. Rahul Bhatt who played the role of a struggling actor and the biological father of the missing kid. On the other hand, actor Ronit Roy who played a senior cop and the step-father of the kid, also working on the case of finding the kid.

The film does leave you speechless in the end and makes it an important movie to watch.

Posham Pa on Zee5

The latest crime-thriller film ‘Posham Pa’ is streaming on Zee5 and after watching this, I can say Bollywood has continued to evolve.

After ‘Barot House,’ Zee5 has brought to us another psychological film based on actual facts which are even darker than the previous movies.

‘Posham Pa’ is a directorial film of a National Award-winning director, Suman Mukhopadhyay. His full attempt in exposing the deep and much darker sides of the human soul. What a human is capable of doing in his/her full conscience.

A story of a mother and two sisters, who are living their life in utter poverty, where the mother played by Mahie Gill losing her conscience and started killing men to steal money and gold.

In a retrospective, her two daughters Shikha and Regha played by (Ragini Khanna and Sayani Ghosh) are becoming serial killers too but not killing men instead killing kids who are poor and begging in the street.

The story goes in past and present form where the sisters individually are giving interview and telling about their mother, their lives and heinous crimes that they have committed.

These characters are shown as cold-blooded murderers with no remorse. ‘Posham Pa’ stand out among the rest not because of the story but because of the terrific performances by the three women.

A Death in the Gunj streaming on Amazon Prime Videos

‘A Death in the Gunj,’ film directed by Konkona Sen Sharma, is a thriller movie set in a small town McCluskiehunj, in Bihar. The story revolves around a family where the principal character is Shutu (Vikrant Massay) which we don’t realize at the beginning of the story though.

The character Shutu is a troubled college student, who recently lost his father and has visited his aunt’s house. This is where the story develops around Shutu, who continually feels bullied by his cousins and their friends.

The character Shutu is shown as a quiet, extremely sensible, and fearful person for whom spending his days with the family seems difficult.

The story has a depth of meaning that surrounds masculinity, power, and suppressed emotions. Konkona Sen Sharma is truly a gem as a director who let explore all her characters but with great details and measurable with the character Shutu.

This is a very underrated film I believe and one of the best pieces of suspense-thriller movies in Bollywood that you should watch.

Badla streaming now on Netflix

Amitabh Bachchan, Taapsee Pannu and Amrita Singh in the lead, thriller movie ‘Badla’ is directed by Sujoy Ghosh. Previously, he has also done two great suspense thriller movies ‘Kahani’ and ‘Te3n’.

The story follows the character Naina (Taapsee Pannu) who is a successful young businesswoman, but her peaceful world soon collapses when she gets arrested for the murder of her lover Arjun with whom she is having an affair.

Here the story begins, when defense lawyer Badal Gupta (Amitabh Bachchan) ask her to work together by starting to tell what exactly happened.

The entire story is shown in the background through flashbacks, where Naina is telling her story which may be true or fake. It is an engrossing narrative which will captivate you throughout till the end. Like every movie of Sujoy Ghosh, there is a heck of a revelation in the end which none can expect.

No matter if you have already watched, if you haven’t yet and want to enjoy a thriller Bollywood movie ‘Badla’ is for you.

Te3n streaming on Netflix

Sujoy Ghosh’s gritty thriller movie ‘Te3n’ is a much quieter movie, surrounding two characters, i.e. Amitabh Bachchan who played the grandfather of the kid and Nawazuddin Siddiqui played a cop. Although the film is longer than it needs to be but evokes suspense and thriller while watching.

I was impressed with the title name ‘Te3n’ which denotes ‘teen’ meaning ‘three’ when I first saw the poster of the film in 2016.

Breathe on Amazon Prime Video

Breathe is a web series which tells the story of a loving father Danny (Madhavan) whose son Josh has a lung disease, and he needs transplant. He is in the waiting list, but he doesn’t have much time left to live. Like any desperate father, Danny wants to save his son from dying.

On the other hand, Kabir Sawant (Amit Sadh) who is an alcoholic cop and has a traumatic past has been assigned a case of multiple murders in the city.

All the murders are linked to Danny. Now, the question remains, is he a murderer? If so, then why?

Now, I am not obviously going to write a review on it but if you haven’t watched ‘Breathe’ yet you can stream it online on Amazon Prime as mentioned above. It is one of the best suspense thriller web series on Amazon Prime India.

Note: Breathe season 2 is coming soon

Sacred Games stream on Netflix

This is nothing new that Sacred Games is one of the best suspense-thriller Indian web series on Netflix. A few days ago, season 2 was out, and after watching both the seasons, I can say that so far Sacred Games has everything that is needed.

It has a theme of violence, crime, loss, politics, and religion with substantial gripping dialogues and stellar performances by Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Saif Ali Khan, and Pankaj Tripathi. Not only that the web series has several other supporting characters who are equally marvelous in their space and role.

Sacred Games can leave you speechless, depressed at certain scenes also entertaining with each episode. If you start watching season 1, you will feel the thrilling factor which continues until the end of season 2.

Ghoul streaming on Netflix

Well, Radhika Apte starring Netflix’s Original web series ‘Ghoul’ is based on a folklore tale. As Nida Rahim, Radhika Apte’s performance in ‘Ghoul’ is spot on. You can say that the web series is carried out pretty much through her shoulder.

The setting of the story is quite impressive, the story takes place in a labyrinth-like maximum-security prison where Nida is a trainer. The eerie background music evokes tension and cringes feeling. Till the monster comes, it is thrilling to watch and have the suspense of the character.

I wouldn’t say it is one of the best horror movies but definitely, one of the best Indian suspense-thriller web series to watch.

 Ghoul web series

Delhi Crime Streaming on Netflix

Netflix’s crime-thriller series ‘Delhi Crime’ is a detailed investigation story of a heinous gang rape case which happened in Delhi a few years ago in December 2012.

The entire series has compelling elements to understand the criminal mindset and the series has also bring to notice the Delhi police department issues like underpaid staff, the inefficiency of police.

Is it a suspense-thriller?

Yes, of course, although the story is crystal clear, but the thrilling factor lies in how the selected police team solve the case in a given period.

Conclusion:

These are the movies and web series that I think have the best suspense-thriller element.

If you think I missed any, then feel free to tell me I will add them on this list.
