So, my first question would be, do you have Amazon Prime Videos?

I am assuming that you do online shopping from Amazon. These days I don’t see anyone who doesn’t have an Amazon account.

In a way, Amazon has made our busy life a little bit relax. As one can have the privilege of buying all kinds of things with great deals from Amazon.

Now, if you are a prime member, you definitely have the perks of watching unlimited movies and series from their lists.

Although in India, the concept of streaming isn’t clear to the people who live outskirts of the city. Some people are still happy with cable channels.

Take my parents for an example, they have a great 40-inch LCD HD TV at home, but they have the least idea about how and what streaming services are. They are happy paying 500 INR a month to the cable operator for channels.

Undoubtedly, Amazon Prime Videos has a massive category of movies and series. You can watch an endless good Bollywood, Hollywood and regional film any time you want.

Now, how is this post going to help you?

Well, nobody likes to keep looking for movies for 10 minutes and gets confused.

So, this is for the Bollywood lovers, especially that I thought of compiling a list of great Bollywood movies to watch on Amazon Prime Videos.

As I said, there are so many that you would require at least 15 – 20 minutes to check out the Bollywood category.

Gully Boy

Zoya Akhtar’s ‘Gully Boy’ has made the headlines of going to the Oscars 2020 for the category of Best International Feature Film.

The film tells the story of a character named Murad, his struggle, social issues, and his life in Dharavi through rapping. How his life changes when he meets a local rapper and how he turned his miserable life to something meaningful through rapping, where he shares his inner thoughts and strong opinions about society.

Gully Boy is a much-acclaimed and crowd-pleasing movie and one of the best Bollywood movies of 2019.

Tumbbad

A period-drama horror film that tells a mythological story about a doomed God Hatsar who is the son of the Goddess Earth. The character Vinayak (Sohum Shah), whose greed rises with each passing year and how the desire ultimately unnaturally ruined them.

More than the story, the climax, the dark, and gothic-themed atmospheric setting made it so unique.

I would say Tumbbad is one of the best horror-thriller films in Bollywood and also available now on Amazon Prime Videos.

Raazi

The story of an uncovered agent of India, who got married into a reputed Pakistani family by her father so that she can get valuable information that can save her country.

Director Meghna Gulzar has never disappointed me as an audience. Her movies are full of pathos yet a strong storyline that touches our hearts.

I watched the film thrice on Amazon Prime Videos. See, that’s the benefit of being a prime member.

Dil Dhadakne Do

2015 Bollywood family-drama film ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’ is a directorial film of Zoya Akhtar. The story revolves around the life of wealthy Indian families, their scandalous affairs, and relationship issues with each other.

The upper-class Mehra family, where the father Kamal Mehra celebrates his marriage anniversary on a cruise ship with the motive to revive his doomed business that is facing bankruptcy.

Kamal, being a shrewd businessman, gives priority to his ambitions more than his children and wife’s happiness.  

Priyanka Chopra and Ranveer Singh both played the wealthy siblings who have their own shares of troubles and family issues. The story has also addressed the issue of gender equality and marital incompatibility.

Akhtar’s Dil Dhadakne Do is a typical melodramatic family-drama with stellar performances by all.

Gone Kesh

I would add 2019 movie ‘Gone Kesh’ next to my list of best Bollywood movies to watch on Amazon Prime Video.

A unique storyline where a girl Enakshi suffers from hair loss and eventually becomes bald. She aspires to become a dancer, but she knows that she can’t do that.

Still, with all the challenges that she is facing on her path, she courageously danced in front of people in a mall at a dance competition.

2019 released two movies back to back on ‘baldness,’ but I would say ‘Gone Kesh’ is a way better movie than ‘Bala’ and ‘Ujda Chaman.’

Batla House

2019 action-thriller film inspired by the controversial ‘Batla House’ encounter case in 2008. A must watch a movie where John Abraham has acted really well for the first time I felt. A story told through the eyes of ACP Sanjay Kumar.

Ribbon

Ribbon isn’t a commercial movie that hit the big screen on Friday. The spirit of the film is different. A story that feels so real in the ultra-urban world where we live.

Kalki Koechlin and Sumit Vyas, a young couple, highlighted some of the crucial issues of our society and practical life. The story depicts Sahana and Karan, who are expecting a child and going through the challenges of parenthood.

They are like a typical urban couple who are working with their deadlines, making sure all the EMIs are paid on time and argue over discussions.

The film shows the audience the harsh realities of modern-day life and sexual assaults.

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara

Zoya Akhtar’s superhit film ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’ is a story of three best friends who take a vacation to Spain before one of their friend Kabir’s wedding. Three friends who are so different from each other have their struggles and fear that they overcame on that trip.

Many people say that the film is similar to Dil Chahta Hai. So, my next point will be –

Dil Chanta Hai

2001 drama film tells the story of three close friends who had great fun together, but after an incident, the three got separated. People still like this film today. This is I believe Farhan Akhtar’s best directorial film. In fact, after this film, the Chapora Fort of Goa become so popular.

Dum Laga Ke Haisa

Everything about this film is lovely. The 90s set, the northern colloquial language, and the songs. It’s a film mainly a love story where Ayushmann Khurrana as Prem gets married to Sandhya (Bhumi Pednekar), but there’s a conflict about her being too healthy.

There are so many small details that have been shown in the film through both the characters that define the thinking process of marriage in our country.

A simple story that has been unconventionally presented to the audience. Indeed, this is one of the best Bollywood movies to watch on Amazon Prime Videos today.

Kati Patang

A box-office superhit film that stars Rajesh Khanna and Asha Parekh in the lead. The story portrays the life of Madhavi (the character of Asha Parekh) and amidst unfortunate events how her life changes when she met the character of Rajesh Khanna.

Gangs of Wasseypur -I and II

Both the films part I and II are incredibly great films to watch. Like all the films of Anurag Kashyap, this one too is based on crime-drama. Actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Manoj Bajpai have given their best performance in the movie.

The film got several awards and rewards from the audience too.

Hichki

‘Hichki’ is a 2018 Bollywood film where Rani Mukherjee made a comeback after four years. She plays a woman with Tourette Syndrome.

The film’s motive is to show the audience what Tourette Syndrome is and aims to create awareness about the acceptance of the condition. This isn’t a disease; it is a speech defect.

The protagonist, despite having excellent academic records, she fails to crack interviews for a teaching position. When after five years, she gets a job in a school, there too she had to face challenges to prove herself worthy of her position.

It is a delightful film to watch. The majority don’t know about Tourette syndrome. So, watching this film is like learning something new.

Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke

Classic comedy-drama ‘Hum Hai Rahi Pyar Ke’ is 1993 one of the most feel-good Hindi cinema. The character Rahul played by Aamir Khan, is the legal guardian of three kids Vicky, Munni, and Sunny, who are incredibly naughty.

Rahul is facing challenges adjusting between his doomed factory and three kids.

Soon, his life takes a beautiful turn when the three kids bring home Vyjayanti, played by Juhi Chawla, who runs away from her home to save from getting married.

It is a delightful film to watch. The chemistry between Rahul and Vyjayanti, along with the three kids, is fun to watch. There is humor, wit, romance, and laughter in the film.

The naughtiest kid Sunny in the movie is now the grown-up Kunal Khemmu.

Thappad

Tapsee Pannu in ‘Thappad’ is a subtle and sensitive portrayal of the subject of domestic violence and male chauvinism. The premise of the movie is simple, depicting the life of a housewife.

Amrita and Vikram live a simple married life.

Amrita arranges her life from waking up, pulling the curtains before Vikram wakes up, testing the blood sugar of her mother-in-law, making tea, carries breakfast to her husband’s bed follows by till Vikram leaves for office.

Her schedule is mundane, who is tied doing the duty of being a doting housewife.

As the title of the film suggests, ‘Thappad’ means ‘Slap,’ a slap that Amrita is refusing to accept. The movie is a bold attempt to show to its audience that even woman with privileges cannot be entitled be a victim of domestic abuse.

‘Thappad’ has a neat message and clear story from the beginning without dragging it unnecessarily.

Hindi Medium

Late Irfan Khan was such a versatile actor. With his unfortunate demise, he has left a gap in the Hindi Cinema. His ‘Hindi Medium’ is a story based on a local businessman Raj and his wife, Meeta. They wish to send their daughter to a top English medium school in Delhi.

How will they get the admission?

Well, that’s the plot of the film. The film touches upon some important issues like the class disparity, modern-day education system, and how money buys everything these days.

Irfan Khan, as usual, has acted brilliantly with his subtle touch of humor.

Parinda

Parinda is a 1989 Bollywood crime-drama film that is sensitive, dark, and exceptionally well-written and directed. The film is an insight into the world of Bombay crime.

The story follows Kishen (Jackie Shroff), who works for Anna (Nana Patekar) is an underworld don. Kishen has a brother Karan (Anil Kapoor), and he wants to keep him away from the crime world.

But Karan was destined to get involved with the underworld. When he sees the murder of Prakash (Anupam Kher) in front of his eyes, he vows to find out the truth.

However, the situation doesn’t favor him, and something gruesome happened.

You must watch ‘Parinda’ only because of the outstanding performances of all the cast, especially Nana Patekar and Jackie Shroff.

The film does have a memorable and beautiful romantic song ‘Tumse Milke’ that we still listen to.

Sui Dhaga

2018 Sui Dhaga is a beautiful movie with Anushka Sharma and Varun Dhawan on the lead. A couple who struggles to meet the daily needs of the family.

Mauji, who gets insulted every time by his boss and their son while Mamta, his wife, couldn’t take this and suggest Mauji start a garment business of his own. Through severe ups and downs and challenges, both presented their designs and garments to a fashion competition.

Tumhari Sulu

Tumhari Sulu, a 2017 family-drama film that isn’t perfect a well-worthy movie yet to watch the story of a housewife who deals with conflicts and pushes herself to do something worthy for herself and her family.

Vidya Balan, as Sulu is a fascinating character and proved once again that she is one of the finest actors in the industry.

So, if you want to watch a light-hearted Bollywood film, and if you have missed ‘Tumhari Sulu,’ then do watch it now on Amazon Prime Videos.

Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge

The superhit Bollywood romantic movie of 1995 where Raj and Simran meet on their trip to Europe and love emerges between them. But they had to fight their destiny in India where Simran is about to get married to someone else.

This is one of Bollywood’s most viewed and most loved movies of all.

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil

People gave so much love to this film that they made yet another film of Karan Johar a superhit. If you ask the storyline, then I would say nothing new is there. Karan Johar’s ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ is like his any other love story, ‘unrequited love’ and ‘triangle love story.’

What makes this film so good?

Ranbir Kapoor’s acting and the music of this film is excellent, especially the ‘title track’ that is sung by Arijit Singh.

‘Photograph’ is a concept film that focuses on two very different individuals one is a photographer at Mumbai’s Gateway of India and a Gujrati girl, studying for CA.

There are some movies that we watch for entertainment, and there are some that we watch to understand the intelligent mind of filmmaking. Ritesh Batra’s Photograph’ is a movie that won’t make you laugh, but if you love films, you will realize how many depths does this movie has.

Newton

 ‘Newton’ is Rajkumar Rao’s brilliantly acted film that tells the story of a government employee who is sent for election duty in Central India on a politically sensitive zone where people don’t even understand what voting is.

He is an honest person who wants a fair election, but hurdles come to his path and how he survived and managed.

‘Newton’ has also got the prestigious National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi.

I am assuming that many of you haven’t watched this amazing film, so do watch it as it is one of the best Bollywood movies to watch.

Andaz Apna Apna

1994 Comedy cult classic movie ‘Andaz Apna Apna’ is a great film to enjoy. There isn’t a single scene in the film that won’t make you laugh. Both Amir Khan and Salman Khan are hilarious to watch.

Kapoor & Sons

Two brothers Arjun and Rahul who returned home to visit their sick grandfather. A middle-class family that goes through financial problems and ego issues between two brothers. But everything soon collapses when a tragedy takes place.

There are a lot of subplots in the film, each character has its own struggle and issues and how a family needs to be always together in times of crisis. So, this is the basic plot of the film.

With excellent acting, songs and storyline make it a pretty solid Bollywood movie to watch with family.

Parched

A story of four women in a village of Rajasthan where they deal with everyday social conflicts, traditions, the dominance of men, marital rape, and child marriage.

The movie brings forth so many more significant issues in our society that still exist. It is an excellent thought-provoking film to watch on Amazon Prime Videos.

I am Kalam

‘I am Kalam’ is one of the best Bollywood films to watch that tells a very endearing story of an underprivileged boy who aspires to be a good and educated man like President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam.

The film has a great realistic and optimistic approach towards the lesson that they intend to give to its audience.

Chotu wants to learn but due to poverty, he can’t. But in his quest for the education he continues to try.

Subh Mangal Zyada Savdhan

2020 Bollywood film ‘Subh mangal Zyada Savdhan’ is a story of a gay couple Aman and Kartik, who faces challenges from Aman’s family in accepting them.

The film is an amusing film with a lot of humor and wit through characters. The film has tried too hard to make the audience laugh, but that somehow was a miss.

Gajraj Rao, as Shankar Tripathi, Aman’s father, is immensely likable because of his spontaneity. Even the pairing of both Gajraj Rao and Neena Gupta as Aman’s parents is lovely to watch them performing onscreen.

For the first time, I didn’t enjoy the character of Kartik (Ayushmaan); Kartik’s swag is undoubtedly killing. But at several scenes, Kartik’s overacting and overdramatic performance is a bit irritating.

Jitendra Kumar, as Aman, appears to be the biggest strength of this film.

Jab We Met

Imtiaz Ali’s Jab We Met is a refreshing and feel-good Bollywood movie to watch on Amazon Prime Videos. Not only the script, but the peppy and beautiful songs along the two young soul’s brilliant performances has also made the film still memorable.

The choice of locations and the dialogues are a delight. Talking about the chemistry of Shahid and Kareena, it’s more about the characters that they played.

The story of Geet and Aditya connects so well the young hearts that it is near to impossible not to include this movie in the list of best Bollywood movies to watch on Amazon Prime Videos.

Sarkar

2005 commercially successful film is about a powerful gangster, his influence among the people, and his rivalries with the political parties.

Subhash Nagre, played by Amitabh Bachchan, is a local quite influential don in Mumbai. He helps the poor victims those who seek justice, and his popularity among the people is supreme.

He has many rival political parties too, who wants his place and rule Mumbai.

It is a plot of betrayal, power, and politics.

After the success of Sarkar, there were two more Sarkar series that were being released but were a flop in the box office.

Manorama Six Feet Under

Manorama Six Feet Under is an underrated and one of the best suspense-thriller movies of Bollywood. It is an intricately designed film that has a layered plot. You have to watch every scene with details because each stage is inter-related with each other. The movie is highly inspired by Roman Polanski’s ‘Chinatown.’

Titli

A dark and disturbing tale of a family of Delhi, where Titli is the youngest of a car-jackers family. They live in the outskirt of Delhi. The brothers of Titli loot everything from the roadside robberies, to fulfill their needs.

Titli is different from his brothers, he has a dream, and he wants to get away from his family. The film ‘Titli’ tells the story of social issues like patriarchy, oppression, a world of right and wrong, dreams, and emotional abuse.

This movie has a realistic approach towards the society that has been shown through the characters. Although commercially not a hit but one of the best Bollywood movies to watch on Amazon Prime Videos.

Ankhon Dekhi

Rajat Kapoor’s ‘Ankhon Dekhi’ sets in the old Delhi, tells the life of the character of Sanjay Mishra, who lives a normal middle-class life until something changes, and he only believes in what he sees around him.

A unique storyline that shows the daily struggles of a layman. The performance of Sanjay Mishra is worthy of watching this film once in your lifetime.

Bajrangi Bhaijaan

Bajrangi Bhaijaan is Salman Khan’s one of the best films to watch till now. His character Pawan, who is a Lord Hanuman devotee, finds a little girl who can’t speak.

In quest of her home, he soon learns that she is from Pakistan, and he decided to take her to her mother. But their journey doesn’t go smoothly.

Lipstick Under My Burkha

Lipstick Under My Burkha is a gem of Bollywood film that speaks about unveiling the woman’s desires. There are four strong woman characters in the movie where each character represents a rebellious form who are shackled in the dominance of men or society.

A bold movie with great acting and dialogues. Of course, it’s not a movie that pleases everyone. To understand the film, you have to widen your thinking horizon.

Chupke Chupke

Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s 1975 comedy-drama classic film ‘Chupke Chupke’ is always a pleasure to watch. No matter how many times you watch this film, it never fails to bring a smile on our faces.

The dialogues between Dharmendra, who played Dr. Parimal Tripathi and Late Om Prakash, who played Raghav, are funny and hilarious.

Not only the songs but the entire movie is so enjoyable and beautiful.

Pushpak

1987 classic Indian film ‘Pushpak’ is India’s first silent film, where Kamal Hassan gave his career’s best performance. Movies like this are classic, and thanks to Amazon Prime Videos that they are streaming such a film for us.

Vaastav

1999 Bollywood action-crime film where Sanjay Dutt played Raghu, who along with his best friend, runs a food stall, but Raghu’s life turns into a nightmare when he becomes a most wanted goon.

The storyline may sound simple, but it is the performance of Sanjay Dutt that made ‘Vaastav’ one of the best movies of his career.

Chandni Bar

The film talks about partition and post-partition, where a family gets separated. There are several characters in the story where each has its importance in the plot.

Undoubtedly, Manoj Bajpai as Rashid, is incredibly brilliant.

Masoom

An Indian drama film of directorial debut Shekhar Kapur, where the story focuses on the life of a family man, his wife and an illegitimate child. The music of this film is truly inspiring and still, people love to listen to them.

The movie is an adaptation of 1980 Eric Segal’s novel Man, Woman, and Child. It is a beautiful film available on both the streaming platforms Amazon Prime Videos and Netflix.

Firaaq

Nandita Das’ directorial film ‘Firaaq’ follows the 2002 riots in Gujrat. It is a story about the victims, culprits, and how people reacted during that violent situation.

Each and every film of Nandita Das captures the fatal truth of society and of human behavior. Her movies aren’t for commercial but they are perfect and indeed the best Bollywood movies to watch.

Trapped

Over the years, Rajkumar Rao has emerged as one of the finest actors of this age. He has done quite several movies that may not be box office superhit but he has proved his precision in acting.

Among the many, ‘Trapped’ is one such film where the entire movie carries on his shoulder.

The character of Rajkumar Rao mistakenly got lock himself inside his new rented apartment on the very top floor where there is no electricity, water or neighbor.

He is trapped, and he knows no help is coming to save him.

An interesting movie to watch I would say.

Tahaan

Watching ‘Tahaan’ is an engaging experience. An innocent story of an eight-year-old boy who lives in the heavenly land of Kashmir with his mother and sister. His father is missing for three years. Can Tahaan find his father?

A beautiful story to watch on Amazon Prime Videos.

Union Leader

This is a great film to watch about industrial safety in a chemical factory. Due to the lack of safety and awareness of how poor factory workers are suffering and their health getting deteriorate.

Union Leader has an amazing storyline and performance by actor Rahul Bhat and Tillotama Shome, but due to the poor execution, the movie didn’t stand out. Still, I would say it is well worthy of a film to watch.

Sadma

Sadma is a 1983 romantic drama film that stars Kamal Hassan and Late Sridevi, where the character of Sridevi after an accident suffers from amnesia and stays with Somu (Kamal Hassan).

Somu protects her in Ooty and eventually fell in love with her but why the film named ‘Sadma’ for that you have to watch it.

Sholay

Who doesn’t know about one of the best Bollywood classic movies ‘Sholay’ of Ramesh Sippy. The film is about the friendship between Jai and Veeru. With melodious songs, and acting of all the cast has made this film a legendary film of Bollywood.

No matter how many times you watch it, you will still love it if you are fond of watching old evergreen movies.
