Beautiful Boy

After done watching Timothee Chalamet’s performance in “Call Me By Your name,” I was caught up watching Felix van Groeningen’s “Beautiful Boy.”

It is a beautiful drama film based on a true story that focuses on the journey of a father, Steve Carell, and his drug-addicted son, Timothee Chalamet.

Timothee outperformed everyone in the film. His portrayal of a troubled drug addict is so intense and emotionally driven that while watching him going through the drug withdrawal, it broke my heart.

Steve Carell also delivered probably his career’s best performance that didn’t lose hope for his son and helped throughout.

The plot is so subject-focus and character-driven it takes you through the father-son relationship.

Photograph

Indian romantic drama film ‘Photograph’ is one of the best Amazon Prime original movies directed by Ritesh Batra, who has given us an incredible 2014 superhit movie “The Lunchbox.”

“Photograph” is an unusual movie about two strangers, a Muslim photographer Rafi and a young girl Miloni who met at the gateway of India. The film is about how two different classes and religions of people met and fall in love.

The love story of both Rafi and Miloni is strange yet heart-warming to watch.

The Aeronauts

The Aeronauts is an amazing 2019 biographical adventurous film that stars Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones in the lead.

The plot is inspired by a true event – when scientists James Glaisher and aeronaut Amelia are set on a balloon expedition.

It is a dramatic story of exploration stuff with entertainment and some elements of adventure. The film let you experience the whole hydrogen balloon scientific expedition during that era, something that happened really.

Women remained involved in the scientific expedition in the late 19th century, and at the turn of the 20th century, women worked prominently in aeronautics pursuits.

The film is inspiring, added value to the plot with some striking visual effects, and with the solid performance of both the actors, it must be on your watch list.

Suspiria

2018 supernatural horror art film “Suspiria” is not for everyone. Set in 1977, Dakota Johnson plays an American woman who is fond of dancing and enrolls herself at a dance academy in Berlin, which is run by a coven of witches.

The classic 1977 horror film inspires the film with the same title. The special thing about this film that is so unique is the use of dance sequences that represent the witchcraft.

I was stunned by the ending of the film. It is visually so poignant and horrible at the same time.

Tilda Swinton plays Madame Blanc, who choreograph her dance sequences as a means of spell casting. Her performance has always spooked me for its sheer brilliance.

But in this film, it is Dakota Johnson as Susie outshines everyone. Her transformation from an innocent girl to the Mother of Sighs defines the level of horror and women empowerment.

Manchester By the Sea

Manchester By the Sea won a few prestigious awards when it was released a few years ago for its brilliant character-driven plot and performance.

A family drama directed by Kenneth Lonergan and featuring Casey Affleck, Michelle Williams, and Lucas Hedges. Casey Affleck as Lee gave his career’s best performance and fetched him the Academy Award for Best Actor.

It is a tale of a man who is broken for losing his family and couldn’t let go of the guilt that he has. It is not a feel-good movie, of course, but definitely, a movie worth watching for its sensitive portrayal of a man who is prey to misfortune and tragedy.

I Am Not Your Negro

“I Am Not Your Negro” is a documentary film that is based on James Baldwin’s manuscript “Remember This House.” Samuel L. Jackson narrates the film.

It is a powerful exploration of the history of racism in the US through Baldwin’s observation and his life through the civil-rights movement.

The film expresses the cultural imagination and wide differences in that era, and even today, it is very much prevalent amongst us.

The film also lets you experience through the narrative Baldwin’s experience of race and sexuality.

His sexuality complexities, contemporary identities, America’s ongoing racial slant, and dilemma, “I Am Not Your Negro” talks all about race from a different perspective that not only you but everyone should watch.

Honey Boy

Amazon Prime Video has recently released “Honey Boy,” a screenplay by Shia LaBeouf, a story that is focused on his childhood and his equation with his father.

You can say it is like a memoir that the actor wrote as an act of therapy while he was in rehab.

It is an honest and vulnerable story that LaBeouf boldly expresses his grievances, choices, being a victim of bad parenting, and his capability of putting together his childhood truth in front of the audience.

It is an unusual portrayal of a person’s very intimate truth of life where LaBeouf has acted splendidly along with young Otis (Noah Jupe).

Paterson

Jim Jarmusch’s one of the rarest and unique film “Paterson” is a film that portrays the imaginative world of the protagonist while staying in a mundane reality of life.

“Paterson” is a story of a poet and a bus driver, the story takes place in Paterson, New Jersey where the name of the protagonist is also Paterson played by Adam Driver.

The film follows a pattern of Paterson’s life, he daily walks down to the bus depot, drives around the town, writes poetry in his notebook during the lunch hour sitting on a bench at his favorite place and followed by living with his partner.

The poems that he writes are his creative space where he finds solace and tranquillity.  The movie is trying to project how it is important to balance the chaos of daily life and mental stability.

Paterson’s life is equally balanced by Laura, his partner, who has an enthusiasm for his poetry, encouraging him to write more and publish.

The movie can have a different interpretation, depends on how you think of the outside and inside the world. It is a film that is one of my favorites, and I am so glad that it is one of the best world cinema has.

Also, the film has a metascore of 90.

The Lost City of Z

“The Lost City of Z” is 2017’s one of the best movies and an adaptation of David Grann’s excellent nonfiction book about the Amazonian exploration in the early 20th century.

It portrays a British explorer Percy Fawcett who is out in the jungle to find an ancient lost city in the Amazon.

The film is visually striking and thrill to watch on how the expedition turns into a tragedy and into a remarkable journey of finding the lost city of Amazon.

Charlie Hunnam playing the lead character of an explorer, is magnetic and delivered a gracious performance.

The film is primarily about a man’s desperation with the vision of finding an extraordinary place in the Earth that no one ever has thought. It’s a marvelous film, indeed.
