If not jumpscares, the entire movie will keep you sit tight and wondering what will happen next.

The Invitation (2015)

When I first watched ‘The Invitation’ on Netflix, I found the film a slow killer. Imagine you were invited to a dinner party where there are other guests available too, but you sense it that something wrong is going to happen.

The story starts with an awkward dinner party with friends where everyone is familiar with each other. They are sharing their life stories and beliefs.

Will, the protagonist, attends the dinner party hosted at his old home by his ex-wife and her partner. He is disturbed by the innumerable memories haunting him and made him feel suspicious of his ex-wife’s invitation.

How does an invitation turn into a nightmare?

I would want you to watch this film and figure out. ‘The Invitation’ is a very different kind of film. I don’t know if this film fits the horror genre of movies or not, but in my opinion, I would say it is a horror film.

Train to Busan (2016)

With an IMDB rating of 7.5, ‘Train to Busan’ is a Korean zombie apocalypse movie that unleashes thousands of zombies and danger of life.

What I felt after watching the movie is more than just a zombie movie, the story shows a sentimental side of a father-daughter relationship. A workaholic and divorced father who gets little time to spend with his little girl, and that make upset.

In the zombie outbreak, the father-daughter will remain alive?

The film will give you a constant fear of zombies and thrill. It is one of the best foreign horror films that people love to watch. If you like to watch a few foreign scariest ever movies, you must watch ‘The Grudge.’

A Quiet Place (2018)

John Krasinski’s directorial horror thriller film ‘A Quiet Place’ has an intriguing premise. A pin-drop silent movie, a gripping tale of a family that struggles to survive in a world that has been taken by noise-sensitive creatures.

Even the sound of a twitch will make you lose your life. Krasinski’s film, when released, became a sensation for being so unique in story and film making. Nobody knew that a movie could be so scary like this.

I believe, ‘A Quiet Place’ has challenged and overtaken the mainstream horror films with three elements: acting, the effect of sound and film making.

The scenes of death, pain, and fear are so effortless shot through sheer performances. There isn’t a moment where the film will bore you despite having literally no dialogues, whatsoever.

A simple story of one family, four characters, and the fear of death every minute makes you wonder about the beauty of the film.

I am eagerly waiting for the ‘A Quiet Place 2 to release.

In the Tall Grass (2019)

‘In the Tall Grass’ is a Stephen King adaptation 2019 supernatural horror drama film that follows sibling Becky, six months pregnant, and Cal who are traveling to San Diego.

While driving down the road, they stopped near a huge field of tall grass as Becky was feeling sick. They hear the voice of a young boy who is seeking help as he is lost in the field.  As the two follow the voice, they got lost in the field too.

Okay, isn’t that enough of the story?

Just like any other Stephen King’s story, in this movie too something unique and unnatural sequences of events follow with Cal, Becky, and Travis.

The ending left unexplained though for the audience. People can have a different interpretation based on what they understood. It is worth checking out on Netflix.

The House Next Door (2017)

The House Next Door is one of the best horror movies on Netflix in Hindi that is worth your time. I will tell you why.

I can’t recommend any good Hindi horror film but ‘The House Next Door’ comes as a fresh breath of air. The movie is well-crafted and executed, keeping in mind the horror genre.

The story starts with Krish and Lakshmi, who lives in a cozy house with a view of the mountains. Supernatural activities began to happen when a new family next door comes to live.

The story brings the theme of evil spirits and possession. There is an element of spookiness and eeriness in the sound effect. You will find enough scenes that will scare you.

Gerald’s Game (2017)

Gerald’s Game is yet another Stephen King adaptation where the story is based on a husband and wife who went on a vacation where the woman gets trapped on her bed handcuffed while her husband is dead.

How will she survive?

Well, when we talk about horror films, the first thing that comes to our mind is the image of a ghost or supernatural entities that make us scared to death. Mike Flanagan’s ‘Gerald’s Game’ don’t have either of the ones.

It is horror in a sense; the plot is dark that explores misogyny and abuse in detail.

There are scenes of horrible hallucinations that the wife started to hallucinate when she is going nuts being handcuffed and doesn’t have the slightest idea of how to escape.

It is a different kind of best horror movies to watch on Netflix.

Perfection (2018)

The next one of the best scary movies to stream on Netflix is ‘The Perfection’: a movie that blends music and grotesque murders.

So, just like Gerald’s Game, and The Invitation, this movie is a much more suspenseful and surprising dark horror drama film. It has deviated from the mainstream horror films and culminates in a modern piece of horror filmmaking.

The story here focuses on two cello prodigy Charlotte Willmore (Allison Williams) and Elizabeth (Logan Browning).

Charlotte left the elite music world to take care of her sick mother, but when she dies, she wanted to join back. In an event in Shanghai, China, she met Elizabeth, who is also an astounding cello player.

The spark between the two women worked and went on a vacation to Western China. The movie has a hell lot of twists and thrills that nobody can expect how it’s going to end.

Both the actors William and Browning delivered an outstanding performance.

I am recommending you to watch ‘The Perfection’ because it’s different. There are no jump scares that we generally expect at any horror flick, there is a different kind of horror you can get a glimpse of in this film.

The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016)

It is an incredible and haunted movie to watch on Netflix. The movie has a simple storyline that follows a father-son team performing an autopsy on an unidentified woman with mysterious injuries. While trying to identify a series of frightening events started to happen.

I can not say much about the movie. It is a hidden gem in the horror movie genre that very people talk about.

I am sure you will like this addition of mine.

The Witch (2015)

Set in the 17^th century, ‘The Witch’ draws you in the world of grief, betrayal, religious paranoia where a cursed family is tearing each other apart. The excellent cinematography, set, acting seems to qualify for being a good horror flick.

If you have a fascination for witches and fantasy horror movies, then this would be an ideal movie for you. I won’t shy away from saying that the film is definitely not the best horror movies on Netflix but no harm in checking out.

IT (2017)

The 2017 Stephen King adaptation movie ‘IT’ is a supernatural horror movie that revolves around a small town Derry, Maine, where a clown who introduces himself as ‘Pennywise’ entices kids and targets them.

Bill Skarsgard as Pennywise, is a horrific and scary clown. What’s the best thing in this film to watch is the acting of the children, especially the boys who acted so naturally.

They are the reason why I enjoyed watching the film. There is no doubt of a mystery and fear in the film, but it all made sense when you see the fear is terrifying the boys.

I would tell you to skip watching IT 2. It is the worst and a disaster.

Under the Shadow (2016)

‘Under the Shadow’ is a Persian horror film, where the story takes place in the 1980s in post-revolutionary Tehran.

It is a gripping horror tale of a mother and a daughter where the later is under supernatural siege. Behind the horror story lies a real story about the nation being ravaged by political conflicts and violent attacks.

The film got premiered on the 2016 Sundance Film Festival and greatly appreciated showing two sides of a story. The film making is what I appreciate the most in this film. It is part horror and part socio-cultural conflict movie.

Language shouldn’t be an issue as you will find English subtitles on Netflix while streaming foreign movies.
