90 / 100

Are you looking for some of the best war movies on Netflix India to watch?

Be it Hollywood, Bollywood, or any other cinema of nation; war movies are always intense to watch. War scenes in film making have developed over the ages.

In almost every war movie, you will see the plots are heavily driven at high-stakes action sequences, psychological struggles that they go through, and a traumatic incident where soldiers have to endure physical damages.

If I talk about Bollywood war movies, they also follow the same plot, a soldier’s love for his country is more than his personal loss.

I have watched several American war movies on Netflix, Amazon Prime, YouTube, even in theatres. I love the American fascination with military heroism.

Set in the middle east countries or the classic war movies revolves around the World war II – these movies depict a chapter of military history and journey. The filmmaker attempts to make the film look realistic enough to touch the audience’s heart and soul.

How it sounded like to face a bombing zone, take fire from the enemy, get ambushed, losing a fellow soldier in the war zone, and finally get rescued.

There aren’t many war movies, though, that has touched me and made them my favorite. Movies like Saving Private Ryan, Black Hawk Dawn, Dunkirk are my all-time go-to list.

In this blog post, I will suggest a few incredibly best war movies on Netflix India to watch. There aren’t many, but I have listed 12 films among them; some are based on true stories.

Dunkirk

Director: Christopher Nolan,

Imdb rating: 7.9

Christopher Nolan’s ‘Dunkirk’ is indeed a masterpiece war movie of the decade. It is visually stunning and incredibly experimental to watch. I watched ‘Dunkirk’ when I was residing in Seattle back in the days. The theatrical experience of watching Dunkirk was enthralling.

I felt the movie is a beautiful wordless piece narrative woven together in 106 minutes. From the beginning, the movie will give you a sound reason to watch without questioning.

Dunkirk moved forward with the theme of honor, duty, and the terror of war faced by every soldier.

The plot revolved around the World war II when the Germans captured 400,000 British and allied soldiers on the beaches of Dunkirk in France.

There is constant tension and fear of death in the movie that you can sense while watching the film. In the film, there are three parts of stories of the war, on the land, sea, and the air.

So, the way he had portrayed one of the darkest hours of history and turned it into a worth watching masterwork.

Schindler’s List

Director: Steven Spielberg

Even after almost 27 years later, IMDB rating: 8.9, Steven Spielberg’s ‘Schindler’s List’ is another masterpiece war-based movie that I am sure 80% of movie-lovers have watched.

We know how much the movie industry respects the film making of Steven Spielberg. His movies aren’t a regular type. His films are intense, mind-twisting, and beyond any person’s imagination. If I could put in simpler words, his movies are ‘quintessential.’

The movie doesn’t have violence or gunfight and bloodshed; it is a classic war film that visualizes the power getting transfer into a quieter symbolic image.

The movie tells the story of a German industrialist and member of a Nazi party Oskar Schindler, who tried to save the lives of around 1200 Polish Jews by keeping them in his factory.

In 1994, the movie got Academy Award, BAFTA Award, Golden Globe Award for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Screenplay, Best Film Editing, and many more.

Schindler's List

Inglorious Bastards

Director: Quentin Tarantino

IMDB rating: 8.3

I consider Inglorious Bastards is Tarantino’s the best film among us. The movie is the best for its best villain ever, Colonel Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz).

He embraces his nickname as the ‘Jew Hunter.’ The plot has bloodshed, some bizarre killing, and crafted dialogues.

The story tells two plots to assassinate the Nazi leadership; one plan is by Shosanna and the other by a team of Jewish American soldiers. Colonel Hans is tracking down the Shosanna and is involved in killing the Jews.

More than the story, Inglorious Bastards is a worth watching movie because of the outstanding performance delivered by every cast.

The Hurt Locker

Director: Kathryn Bigelow

IMDB rating: 7.6

The Hurt Locker is not a core action-war drama film. It is more of an intellectual, philosophical, and gut-wrenching best war film of 2008.

The story of The Hurt Locker revolves around a bomb diffusing team lead by Sergeant William James, who is reckless towards his handling of bomb diffusing jobs and that gives rise to conflicts.

The film is highly visual and quite nerve-wracking. Though many critics have said that the film is a bit unrealistic and overrated, still, it is considered as one of the best.

Lone Survivor is a 2013 biographical action film based on the 2007 non-fiction book by Marcus Luttrell. It tells a remarkable true story set during the war in Afghanistan when four SEALs on a mission targeting a Taliban commander Ahmad Shah.

After an unfortunate change, of course, the four SEALS were seen by a local goat herder, they were convinced that the goat herder would alert the Taliban about their whereabouts. So, they decided to abort the mission.

Upon their return, they were attacked by the Taliban.

Will the four survive?

I would want you to watch this amazing one of the best war movies on Netflix, in case you missed it.

Fury

Director: David Ayer

IMDB Rating: 7.6

Brad Pitt, starring ‘Fury’ is an excellent war movie on Netflix to watch. The film depicts the story of the US tank crew in Germany during World War II. It has a solid storyline that is sufficient to grab attention and hold interest.

Brad Pitt playing the alpha male in Fury, is appreciable. The two hours of grime, dirt, and near to perfection film is worthy of watching.

After watching Brad Pitt performing in ‘Inglorious Bastards’ so phenomenally, Fury is yet another milestone for him to show how versatile he can be.

Fury (2014)

Sand Castle

Writer: Fernando Coimbra

IMDB rating: 6.3

Netflix’s Sandcastle is a beautiful 2017 American war movie that is based on the true events experienced by the writer Chris Roessner during the Iraq war.

The story revolves around a young soldier named Matt Ocre, who has been assigned the task of restoring water in a village in Iraq.

The main story starts when Ocre and his squad discovers that they have to repair a broken water system in a town of Baqubah. While doing the water work, they encountered other conflicts too.

The movie depicts how the water situation in remote villages in Iraq is and how the soldiers are honoring in doing their duty.

A soldier turned writer Chris Roessner told in an interview that how much difficult yet overwhelming ‘Sand Castle’ is for him. He said he had lived with the script for seven years. (Source: Foxnews.com)

It’s a great film to watch.

12 Strong

Director: Nicolai Fuglsig

IMDB rating: 6.5

Chris Hemsworth is starring in the lead 2018 American war-drama film ’12 Strong’, is based on the non-fiction book Horse Soldiers by Doug Stanton.

The story depicts the first Special Forces team who are deployed to Afghanistan after 9/11, the team of 12 on a dangerous mission to take down the Al Qaeda troops.

It seems Chris Hemsworth really enjoys high-sequence action-drama. His recent film ‘Extraction’ on Netflix did well only because of the jam-packed series of action.

In ‘12 strong,’ illuminates the American military heroism. There are too many flaws in the movie; I am not saying that this is the best war movie of all time. But if you are looking for war movies mainly on Netflix, you could consider watching ’12 Strong.’

Amidst the ugly political turmoil, poverty, and violence, how the innocent heart of thousands of young boys are being forced to fill with hatred and are being trained to commit bloodbath.

The film shows the brutal side of Africa. The film urges us to see the harsh reality that co-exists for ages in the African continent.

2012 thriller film ‘Zero Dark Thirty’ depicts the decade-long manhunt leader Osama bin Laden. How a highly efficient CIA officer Maya sticks to her belief that Laden is not in a cave in Afghanistan and follows the trail with a group of other officers to kill Osama.

It is an enjoyable movie for a one-time watch. There are a lot of tensions, political unrest, and chase sequences that are interesting to watch.

Zero Dark Thirty (2012)

First They Kill My Father

IMDB rating: 7.2

Angelina Jolie’s directorial film ‘First They Killed My Father’ is based on Loung Ung’s memoir of the same name. The story of the film is set in 1975. When the 5-year-old Ung, during the Vietnam war, was forced to join a child soldier troop.

I am bound to say that no one will make such a movie. The movie chooses to tell the truth over the glam and gloss. As we all know, Jolie is a philanthropist and an inspiring figure.

She tells the narrative from the perspective of a 5-year-old child who learns about the world in an uncomfortable angle. Ung, at a very young age, loses her family members and becomes a child soldier without her consent.

We know less about Cambodian history or true stories, ‘First They Kill My Father’ is a film that you should watch.

The film was screened on the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival and later released on Netflix worldwide.

First They Killed My Father

The Siege of Jadotville

The siege of Jadotville is a war movie based on the book of the same name by Declan Power. The film talks about the assassination of Congolese Prime Minister and the outbreak of civil war on how around 155 Irish soldiers found themselves trapped in a remote mining town in the Congo in 1961.

Netflix’s film focuses on the role of the commander pat Quinlan, who led the 155 Irish men and how he saved their lives. There wasn’t a single Irish man killed in the four-day battle.

This is indeed one of the best war movies based on true stories on Netflix.
